Koyla was directed by Rakesh Roshan and written by Sachin Bhowmick and Ravi Kapoor. Rakesh Roshan previously made films including the drama Khudgarz (1987), the revenge drama Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), the comedy-drama Kishen Kanhaiya (1990) and Karan Arjun (1995). Rakesh Roshan has chosen the story of revenge drama which was in line with his previous work, Karan Arjun.

The film collected Rs 3.10 crore in its first weekend and went onto collect Rs 5.52 crore in its first week. Koyla ended its theatrical run with only Rs 15 crore against a budget of Rs 12 crore and was declared “Average” at the box office.
