There were four significant Bollywood films which were released today in the past years – Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai starrer Guru, Anurag Kashyap directed Mukkabaaz, Saif Ali Khan starrer Kaalakandi and Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta starrer Farz. Let us check how the films fared at the box office.

Farz – 2001

High-octane action scenes, solid-punching dialogues and wholesome entertainment – This is what defines Farz, starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Om Puri. Directed by Raj Kanwar, the film opened well and did good business in few circuit, ending with “Above Average” grosser tag at the box office, minting Rs 11.26 crore against a budget of Rs 10 crore.

Guru – 2007

Abhishek Bachchan and Mani Ratnam came back with Guru after giving a mind blowing film Yuva. Also starring Aishwarya Rai, Guru told the inspiring journey of Dhirubhai Ambani from a small time trader to a business tycoon. The movie was well-received by the audience and critics and turned out to be “Hit” at the box office, minting Rs 46 crore against a budget of Rs 22 crore.  Adding charm to the film was the tuneful songs by A.R.Rahman.

2018 started on a dull note as there were two major releases – Saif Ali Khan’s Kaalakandi and Vinnet Kumar Singh’s Mukkabaaz. Talking about the former, it was an experimental cinema from the writer of Delhi Belly. The trailer of the dark comedy looked promising but the promo was not good enough to excite the audience. On top of it, the reviews were bad, though Khan’s performance was appreciated. Kaalakandi turned out to be a disaster at the box office, collecting just Rs 4.78 crore against a budget of rs 18 crore.

Personally, I felt Mukkabaaz could have promoted appropriately as it did not have a face value to bring the audience to the theaters. Nevertheless, the boxing drama, directed by Anurag Kashyap, was spontaneous and electrifying with its high voltage drama and admiring performances by the star cast, especially Vineet Kumar Singh. The good news is that it did well than the other films released on the same day but turned out to be an average grosser at the box office, collecting Rs 10.63 crore against a budget of Rs 12 crore.
