Ranveer Singh starrer 83 faced restrictions amid rising cases which hampered its growth in first week despite excellent reviews.
After a long wait, the makers of the much anticipated film 83 have released the story of the iconic cricket match of India. The incredible true story of the underdogs who pulled off the unthinkable, the cricket drama hit the big screen yesterday with much fan fare.

Directed by Kabir Khan, 83 was one of the most anticipated films of the year. The film revolves around India’s historic 1983 World Cup win. Ranveer Singh will be seen stepping into the shoes of Kapil Dev. Also starring are Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiiva, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Ammy Virk, Addinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa, R Badree and Pankaj Tripathi. Deepika Padukone will be seen playing Romi, Kapil Dev’s wife.
Produced by Reliance Entertainment, Phantom Films, Kabir Khan Films Production, 83 had opened to Rs 12.64 crore from 3741 screens nationwide which was below expectations, considering the massive budget of the film. There was a slight jump on Christmas day with Rs 16.95 crore but Sunday was decent with Rs 17.60 crore, bringing the first weekend collections to Rs around Rs 47.20 crore from 3741 screens including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam languages. Though the opening has been good but much was expected from the cricket biopic drama as the budget is close to Rs 200 crore. The restrictions due to rising COVID-19 cases and limited occupancy had hampered its growth. The silver lining is the exceptional reviews and strong word of mouth which should help the film to make some impact during the holiday season.
Released in 3D. Kamal Haasan’s Raajkamal Films International and Akkineni Nagarjuna’s Annapurna Studios join hands with Reliance Entertainment to present the Tamil and Telugu versions respectively of the film. Prithviraj’s production, and Kichcha Sudeepa’s Shalini Arts are set to present the film in Malayalam and Kannada versions. The film is jointly produced by Deepika Padukone, Kabir Khan, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Sajid Nadiadwala, Phantom Films, Reliance Entertainment.
