Swades was one of the finest Indian movie made which was very well directed, well scripted and a powerful performance given by Shah Rukh Khan. Let us see how it fared at the box office.
Swades was directed, scripted and story told by Ashutosh Gowarikar (who made Lagaan). Ashutosh has chosen the story which was completely different from his previous venture. The direction was impressive handling actually many sequences with perfection.
The story of NRI coming back to his roots and doing something worthwhile was equally absorbing with amazing cinematography capturing the beautiful locales of Indian villages. Dialogues were inspiring. Music by the legend A.R.Rahman was soul- riveting. Each and every song had some message to tell with beautiful lyrics written by Javed Akhtar. Coming to the performance , I couldn’t have imagined anyone but Shah Rukh Khan playing Mohan Barghav. The actor has given his career best and very well deserved performance. The bad news is that the film never worked at the box office.
According to the Boxofficeindia.com, Swades was released on 17th December 2004 at 350 screens to Rs 1,63,00,000. The film collected Rs 5,15,00,000 in its first weekend and went onto collect Rs 8,28,00,000 in its first week. Swades ended its theatrical run with Rs 16,31,00,000 and was declared “Flop” at the box office. Thanks to its wonderful social message, Swades has earned a cult status over the years and currently stands at 35th position of the Highest Rated Indian films in IMDB.com
