Farhan Akhtar debuted in Bollywood with probably the best friendship film, Dil Chahta Hai, released in 2001. Aamir Khan, who already stunned everyone playing the role of a villager, Bhuvan, who fought against Britishers in the cricket-match drama, Lagaan, transformed himself into the urban-cool, Akash. He was adequately supported by the confused Sameer (brilliantly played by Saif Ali Khan) and more matured, Siddharth (one of his best performance by Akshaye Khanna). The movie brilliantly depicts the coming-of-age drama of three friends as they move from a care-free college to a more responsible professionals.

Music by Shankar-Eshaan-Loy was memorable while performances by Preity Zinta and Sonali Kulkarni was nice. As per BoxOfficeIndia.com, Dil Chahta Hai opened to a good response across the city multiplexes in India. Owing to its urban-centric theme, Dil Chahta Hai remained strong at the class centers while the earnings were limited at the mass area. The friendship drama collected Rs 20 crore against a budget of Rs 14 crore.
