Growing up in Bishan County, she exhibited behaviors that defied traditional gender norms. She kept her hair short, dressed in male clothing, and was often mistaken for a boy. At school, she was even told she was using the wrong restroom.

At 18, she married a man named Tang, and the couple had a son within a year. However, her life took a dramatic turn when her body began to change. A surge in androgenic hormones caused her to grow facial hair, lose breast tissue, and develop male reproductive organs. These changes eventually led to her divorce.

After the divorce, she left her son with her ex-husband and started living as a man. She moved to a new county, worked in a shoe factory, and met Zhou, a female colleague. Zhou fell in love with her, but their relationship faced legal challenges since her ID still identified her as female, and same-sex marriage is not allowed in China.

To overcome this, Liu proposed an unusual arrangement: Zhou would legally marry her ex-husband Tang, while she and Zhou continued to live together. Tang agreed, and Zhou later gave birth to a son, adding to their unique family dynamic.
