The Shanghai Marriage market is held at Peoples’s Park every weekend between 12 pm to 5 pm in Shanghai. Amid the busy city, surrounded by palm trees, ponds and winding paths, parents of unmarried children gather at the park every Saturday and Sunday to exchange information about their children.

The people whose marriage is being discussed are absent and instead, handwritten posters are pinned to umbrellas and shopping bags or taped to the ground. These posters consists of important information such as age, height, weight, annual salary, education, or assets owned by them. Parents will then evaluate the potential candidates and then select the best possible match for their children.

The parents will talk to each other about the qualities they are looking for, and if they hit if off and believe they have found a good match, they will set up meeting of the children and hope it goes well. For testing the compatibility, they also check the Chinese Zodiac signs of the individuals.

This concept of marriage market first started in the year 2004 in Beijing, and apart from Shanghai these markets are also held in Beijing and Chengdu.
