Highlighting the importance Washington places on New Delhi as the Trump administration takes office, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Walz conducted their 1st bilateral & international meetings with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Minister Jaishankar is in Washington at the invitation of the US Government to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the US. This meeting between the top diplomats from the world’s oldest and largest democracies was held at the US State Department’s Foggy Bottom headquarters. The bilateral talks were preceded by the 1st Quad ministerial meeting after Donald Trump’s presidency began.

Marco Rubio’s choice to hold his first bilateral discussion with India’s S Jaishankar is particularly notable, as typically the first foreign engagement of any new US administration includes Canada, Mexico, or any of its NATO allies.

The bilateral meeting between new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Dr Jaishankar took place less than one hour after Rubio assumed office. These 2 leaders engaged in extensive discussions covering the full scope of the India-US strategic partnership. The lengthy meeting also included India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra. Following the talks, Secretary Rubio and Dr Jaishankar appeared jointly before international media, shaking hands and posing for the official photographs.
