The U.S. presidential race is neck-and-neck, with polls showing a tight battle between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Key swing states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina, will be pivotal in deciding over  the final outcome.

Trump's approval rating remains stuck at 43%, and he hasn't surpassed 50% since leaving office, signaling a cap on his support and contemporarily making it difficult for him to win the national popular vote.

There are 4 major issues here: the economy, immigration and border control, abortion rights, and protecting democracy. With 60-70% of Americans believing the country is on its way to the wrong direction, the election is shaping up to be a referendum on the current administration. Historically, when voters feel the nation is on the wrong track, the incumbent president tends to lose support, giving the challenger an edge, a trend which Kamala Harris is currently facing.

Trump is seen as the more competent candidate on economic matters, leading by 15 points in swing states, as the cost of living has increased by 10-40% under Biden’s administration. Trump has also made immigration a crucial issue, and voters see him as the stronger candidate to manage border security. Though immigration rates have decreased in Biden’s 2nd term, the first years of his presidency were marked by many challenges in this area.

On the other hand Kamala Harris, is seen as a defender of reproductive rights, and she is ahead of Trump by 15 points or more among women voters in key battleground states. Abortion is on the ballot in 2 important swing states—Nevada and Arizona—which benefits Harris. If Trump wins, it will signal that voters trust him on issues like inflation, immigration, and crime. However, there may be underlying concerns about Harris—specifically, her identity as a Black and South Asian woman—that could affect some voter support.

The race remains unpredictable, and the next 24 hours will be very important. Will Harris’ grassroots efforts tip the scale in her favor, or will Trump’s economic messaging relate with voters? The nation watches closely, excitingly waiting the final results.
