On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the India-Nepal border region with the worst of its epicenters in Nepal. Although there had been reports of small tremors in various parts of the border region, these signs went largely unnoticed as no major seismic activity had occurred within the region in a long period. The magnitude of the quake resulted in an estimated 9,000 deaths and caused massive destruction of buildings and infrastructure.

3. Central Italy in 2016

In October 2016, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook Central Italy, with its epicenter located in Norcia, Italy. Like many other earthquakes, signs of increased seismic activity had preceded this one. In the weeks leading up to the quake, tremors were felt in and around the region, as well as reports of mysterious airborne booms coming from the region’s mountains. Despite these warnings, many of the citizens downplayed the signs, leading to an estimated 300 deaths and more than 1000 people injured.
