It’s been two weeks since #BlackLivesMatter protest erupted which has resulted in unrest in the US. The movement gradually spread and has gained solidarity from across the world. The protest simply initiated with the demand of justice for George Floyd, later it garnered massive support from the people and the same issue was taken to the broader spectrum where people commanded racial equality for all. Later, politicians, other people in authority expressed their opinions, and the problem of police brutality got highlighted. Civil liberties and civil rights are questioned.

It is not that these problems are new to the society. These issues have their roots in our society for ages. Racism has always been a prominent obstacle in humankind. Racial inequality is experienced by people in every domain of life. There are a lot of incidents that took place in the past where police have misused their authorities. Then why did it take so long for the people to realize the graveness of these problems? Why we wait for someone to die to bring changes in our community and institutions?

Unfortunately, this time people waited for George Floyd to get tormented and he is the one whose death seems to bring reforms in the society. Even though this unfortunate incident happened in the US, the problems exist across the globe. Thus, only thinking from the US perspective will be wrong and one-sided. This has to be considered at the international level.

Police departments around the world are in motion to ban neck restraints and neck holds this is the result of a protest which is on-going across the globe in the wake of the death of George Floyd who lost is life because the white policeman pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck. An intriguing fact is a similar incident had earlier taken place in 2014 which resulted in the death of Eric Garner.  It took six years to bring this change.

The death of George Floyd has symbolized the continuation of systemic racial division and the exploitation of black lives. The unjust killing of black race people and police brutality has to be strongly condemned otherwise we as a society will fail to make a good world and a better place to live in for our future generations.

Let’s hope that no other George Floyd will have to die to bring the change we will come a step ahead to eradicate the prevailing social barriers.
