Local MLA Rais Sheikh of the Samajwadi Party criticized the Bhiwandi-Nizampura Municipal Corporation (BNMC) for failing to contract dog sterilization services for years, leading to a rise in dog bite incidents, with the latest victim being young Layba Sheikh.

According to police, last month, three stray dogs bit 55 people in Bhiwandi's Shanti Nagar area. After Layba was attacked, she was first taken to IGM Hospital in Bhiwandi, which then referred her to Thane's civil hospital due to the severity of her injuries.

Layba's mother reported that after administering two anti-rabies shots and dressing her wounds, the doctor discharged her the following day without proper treatment. The child later developed a fever, and when her condition did not improve, she was taken back to the civil hospital. There, the doctor inadequately examined her and referred her to Sion Hospital in Mumbai, where she died on Sunday night after several days of treatment, according to her father, Asif.

The family holds the civil hospital doctor responsible for negligence, asserting that proper treatment could have prevented her condition from worsening.

Residents have noted an increase in dog bite incidents in Bhiwandi. Rais Sheikh claimed that, according to health department data, 800 dog bite cases were reported in Bhiwandi in the past month alone. He has called for an FIR against civic officials for failing to issue a contract for dog sterilization.

In response to the MLA's request and the Bhiwandi civic body's appeal, the Ulhasnagar municipal body sent a dog sterilization team to Bhiwandi's Shanti Nagar area on Tuesday, where they captured several stray dogs.
