In the second ODI of the England tour of India, Jos Butler won the toss and chose to bowl at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. India had a slow start to their innings and lost Shikhar Dhawan early in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had a small partnership that added some runs in the first ten overs, the former departed yet again on an ordinary delivery after a good start. Kohli and KL Rahul had a century stand partnership that controlled the Indian innings after two early wickets. The Indian skipper departed after scoring a fighting half-century while Rahul got to his ODI century. It was Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya who created havoc in the last ten overs of the first half of the match and helmed India to a mammoth total of 336.
England also had a slow start to their innings, but with every passing overs, the English openers accelerated to bring the run rate under control. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow yet again had a century stand partnership which laid the foundation for the big run chase. Ben Stokes anchored the chase for England while Bairstow played the supporting role. Stokes departed when he was one run shy of his ton. Bairstow completed his 11th ODI ton when he smashed a six at the deep mid-wicket. The counter-attacking partnership of Bairstow and Stokes completely shifted the moment in England’s favour. England was cruising comfortably towards the big total before India struck thrice in less than two overs and made the game interesting. After three quick wickets, Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone’s steady partnership took England over the finish line which also helped them to keep the series alive.
