In the first Test match of England tour of India, Joe Root won the toss and chose to bat against the hosts. The England skipper led the batting as he went on to score a double ton with contributions from David Bess (87), and explosive innings from Ben Stokes (82) which helped England put on a score of 578 in the first innings after batting till the first session of day 3. In reply India registered 378, a century stand partnership between Rishabh Pant (91) and Cheteshwar Pujara (73) rescued India from a difficult position. A crucial inning of (85) from Washington Sundar at the back end of the innings helped India to get past the 350-run mark. India wrapped England’s second innings at 178, Ravichandran Ashwin fetched six wickets. In the fourth innings, India needed 420 runs to win the first Test match.
The hosts lost Rohit Sharma early in the chase which shifted the momentum towards the visitors. Pujara and Shubman Gill (50) were looking robust at the crease but the former fell prey to Jack Leach’s beautiful delivery. As Gill, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar lost their wickets in quick succession, the home team couldn’t sustain the fall of wickets. Kohli and Ashwin had a 50-run partnership, which was broken by Leach. Ben Stokes managed to get the big-fish Kohli when the Indian skipper was looking in his zone. The England pacers wrapped up the Indian pacers in no time and grabbed a 227 runs victory in the first Test match of the bilateral series.
