Root came out to bat at 63-2 after the visiting England team lost two quick wickets and the momentum was shifted towards the hosts. The England captain showed patience against the Indian bowlers, took his time to settle in and then started putting the bad balls away. He played the role of an anchor for the England team in the first two days of the Test match. Root batted for four-session before the Indian bowlers could get rid of him. Root reached to his fifth double ton with a maximum off Shahbaz Nadeem’s delivery. He was struck on his pad right in front of the stumps on 218 on Nadeem’s bowling, his innings decorated with 19 fours and two sixes.
