In the first ODI of the England tour of India, Eoin Morgan won the toss and chose to field at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. The Indian openers had a slow start to their innings and only managed to score 38 runs in the first ten overs. With every passing over Shikhar Dhawan along with the Indian skipper, Virat Kohli shifted the gears and started scoring runs quickly in the middle overs. Dhawan departed while the southpaw was just two runs short of his century. In the last ten over, the debutant Krunal Pandya and KL Rahul amassed 112 runs which helped India to cross the 310-run mark on the scoreboard and set up a competitive total for the visitors.
The English openers were brutal in the powerplay and took apart the Indian bowlers without any difficulties. The Indians were clueless against Jonny Bairstow’s hammering and the openers went on to churn out 135 runs for the opening partnership within the first 15 overs of the game. Jason Roy was the first victim of India, after the first wicket, the Englishmen couldn’t manage to contain the fall of wickets. It was the Indian team’s golden arm, Shardul Thakur yet again managed to take two wickets in a single over which completely changed the course of the game. Thakur dismissed Eoin Morgan and Jos Butler in the same over. England kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, while there was fightback from Moeen Ali and Sam Billings in the middle overs which couldn’t do much damage to the Indians. India wrapped up the visitors’ innings at 255 and the home team clinched the first game of the series by 66 runs. The debutant Prasidh Krishna played a crucial role in India’s victory after pocketing four wickets while Shardul Thakur also got three wickets to his name.
