The Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer dislocated his shoulder during the first ODI against England on Tuesday. As soon as he sustained the injury while fielding at extra cover to prevent the boundary, he was taken off the field and immediately he was ruled out from the remainder of the series. In the reports, the scan suggests a labrum tear which will be healed through surgery. DC’s co-owner Parth Jindal also confirmed on Twitter that Iyer will be missing out on the entire upcoming edition of the IPL so that the player is fully fit for the T20I World Cup.
In the previous edition of the IPL, DC finished the season as finalists under the captaincy of Iyer and the 26-year-old’s absence in the playing XI will be a huge loss for the team. It will be a big task for DC’s management to find Iyer’s replacement. Here are three players who could captain DC in the upcoming edition of the IPL:
- Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Rahane might be one of the contenders for the role of captaincy as the veteran batsman has captained India in the longest format and also Rajasthan Royals in the past seasons. The Indian team helmed by Rahane beat Australia in the Test series in Australia earlier this year would work in the veteran batsman’s favour for DC’s captaincy.
- Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant has been in good touch since December, his heroics in Australia and aggressive batting against England in the longest format has made the Indian management show immense faith in him. Pant has also been a star performer for Delhi in the IPL over the past few years. Ricky Ponting and the DC management would be interested in handing the captaincy to the attacking wicket-keeper batsman in the upcoming edition of the IPL.
- Steve Smith
The former Rajasthan Royals captain will be playing his first season with Delhi Capitals after being released. Smith couldn’t find much success in his batting as well as in the captaincy in the previous season but the coach, Ricky Ponting would consider Smith for this role considering his experience.
