25th January has been a special day in the history of Bollywood when major big films releases. On this day in previous years, films like Manikarnika, Thackeray, Padmaavat, Raees, Kaabil and Race 2 were released. Let us see how the films fared at the box office.
Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi – 2019
The Kangana Ranaut starrer Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi ended its theatrical run a good note after spending seven weeks at the box office when released last year. The Kangana Ranaut starrer Manikarnika had shown strong legs at the ticket window. Due to good word-of-mouth appreciation, Manikarnika collected a total after seven weeks to Rs 98.02 crore against a budget of Rs 99 crore. The film closed its worldwide total of Rs 142 crore. Though the movie could not make it to the 100 crore club domestically, the numbers are significant considering it was a solo Kanagana Ranaut release who drove the film on her shoulder with an exceptional performance.
Thackeray – 2019
Following the life of the founder of the Indian political party Shiv Sena, Bal Thackeray, the Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Thackeray opened to a solid response. However, due to poor reviews, Thackeray managed to collect good amount in initial days but could sustain further, minting Rs 39.40 crore. The earnings were enough to cross the budget of Thackeray which was Rs 20 crore
Padmaavat – 2018
January 2018 saw spade of films like Mukkabaaz, Kalakandi, 1921, Vodka Diaries and Padmaavat. Out of these, only Padmaavat became an instant blockbuster becoming the first film for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor to collect Rs 300 crore against a budget of Rs 215 crore. Padmaavat was lauded for its bold direction, exemplary CGI and commendable performances.
Raees talks about the story of a bootlegger which also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pakistani Actress Mahira Khan. To add spice to this, Sunny Leone performed the item number “Laila” in the film. The action entertainer opened to a solid response all over India. Raees, which was directed by Rahul Dholakia, had an extraordinary start in Gujarat (due to local flavor) and West Bengal (due to Shah Rukh Khan’s effect). In few places, the collections in single screens were better than Dangal and Sultan.. Inspite of clash with Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil, Raaes collected Rs 138 (approx) at the domestic box office.
Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil had surely won the hearts of the audience. Though Kaabil opened to average response, it picked up later thanks to its glowing reviews. Also starring Yami Gautam in key role, Kaabil collected a solid Rs 104.34 crores at the end of its run against a budget of Rs 89 crore.
Though Kaabil has done better in the later part of the release, the winner of this box office clash certainly is Raees.
The respect and the appreciation which Race got when it was released in 2008, Race 2 destroyed it. With bigger budget and even bigger star cast, Race 2 was a total disappointment. However, it was able to touch 100 crore (Rs 101.45 crore) against a budget of Rs 94 crore.
