2000 was the year of newcomers. After the grand launch of Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel in Kaho Na ..Pyaar Hai, much was expected from another big release – J.P Dutta’s Refugee.

J.P Dutta already had a huge impact on the audience as his previous release, Border, was “All-Time Blockbuster. This coupled with dream launch for Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor into Bollywood films had the set the sky-high expectations for Refugee.

Unfortunately, Refugee could not meet the expectations of the audience due to the length of the film and weak screenplay. Based on a short story “Love Across the Salt Desert” written by Keki N. Daruwalla, Refugee was praised for strong direction, admiring performances and beautiful song composed by Anu Malik and lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar for which they won the National Awards.

Refugee collected a decent Rs 17.08 crore against a budget of Rs 15 crore, making it an “Average” earner at the box office.
