There were three significant Bollywood films which were released today in the past years – Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Tabu and Pooja Batra starrer Virasat, Ajay Devgn, Urmila Matondkar, Nana Patekar, Rekha and Fardeen Khan starrer Bhoot and Rajkummar Rao starrer Citylights. Let us check how the films fared at the box office.
A remake of Tamil film, Thevar Magan, which was directed by Bharathan, Virasat was probably one of the best film to come out in the year 1997. Directed by Priyadarshan, Virasat had a strong star cast comprising of Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Tabu and Pooja Batra. Based on the story revolving around the war between two brothers, Virasat entertained us with memorable performances by Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri and Tabu. Pooja Batra impressed in her debut while the story by Kamal Hassan and screenplay by Vinay Shukla was clap-worthy.
Anu Malik, though reused some of the tunes from Ilayaraja from the Tamil hits, composed some of beautiful songs like “Payalay Chunmun” , “Tare Hain Barati”, “Ek Tha Raja” and “Dhol Bajne Laga”. The scene between Amrish Puri and Anil Kapoor from the film where he tries to convince Anil Kapoor to stay back and improve the condition of the village is probably one of the best scenes in the history of Indian cinema. The movie opened slow but picked up well and turned out to be “Super-Hit” at the box office.
From the director of Shiva, Raat, Rangeela and Company, Ram Gopal Varma went one step ahead with the Ajay Devgn, Urmila Matondkar, Nana Patekar, Rekha and Fardeen Khan starrer Bhoot. The tight screenplay with spine-chilling moments in Bhoot will keep you on the edge of the seat. If you have not watched it, better make sure it is added on your watch list. The movie opened well and turned out to be “Super-Hit” at the box office.
The collaboration between Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao struck gold again with Citylights after the award winning, Shahid. A remake of British film Metro Manila (2013), Citylights had wonderful performances by the extremely talented Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha along with tuneful music by Jeet Gannguli. Unfortunately, the movie did not click at the box office.
