The OTT platforms seem to be slowly replacing TV and cinema halls. The rise of the web series in India is increasing day by day as the audience consuming OTT is rising. There are multiple reasons for this and one of the major reasons is the content. Today the spectators want more of content-driven shows and not shows which have stardom. They want content that is worth their money.
Thus web series has evolved the Indian ‘content.’ We have some phenomenal web series based on unconventional topics that were earlier never touched upon. Youngsters played a huge role in making digital platforms what they are today. Web shows have completely broken the stereotypes of melodramas, large than life content, and Saas-Bahu sagas it is a lot more beyond that. One feature of web shows that make stand apart is most of them are reality-based. The viewers can easily connect with it. Web series uses the language of the common man.
It has a plethora of subjects taking from Live-in relationships, horror series, documentaries, stand-up comedies, homosexual love stories, sci-fi thrillers, crime thrillers, and a lot more. It has given a breakaway and opportunity to many actors.
Sacred Games on Netflix became the rising star in the Indian web series that helped India become a global force in the web series space. Sartaj Singh, played by Saif Ali Khan and Ganesh Gaitonde, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui became the household names. The story of Sacred Games revolves around a troubled police office in Mumbai, Sartaj Singh who receives a call from gangster Ganesh Gaitonde, asking him to save the city (Mumbai) within 25 days. And it opened the gate away for amazing Indian content in web series.
Since then the Indian based series never looked back. The other series like Mirzapur, Inside Edge, Four More Shots Please, Lust Stories, Jamtara, Made In Heaven, Criminal Justice, Kaafir, The Family Man, Asur to name a few. All these series are based on varied topics that earlier Bollywood industry and telly town never touched upon.
The specialty of these web series is that almost all of them have the unconventional artistic actors like its content. The actors themselves—with not exactly Bollywood looks, they are more of girl-next-door or college-going neighborhood youngsters. The web series made in different genres are giving wide variety to the audience.
In the web space, appreciation from the audience is spontaneous. The OTT platforms are resisting the government’s proposal to bring a censorship mechanism for regulating the content of web series—mainly adult themes and strong language because it has a lot of prominence in connecting with people.
