After the humiliating loss at Adelaide in the first Test match, the Indian cricket team was left in a turmoil. Adding up to that, Virat Kohli left for India after the first match of the bilateral series for his paternity leave with India’s experienced pacer Mohammed Shami getting injured while batting in third innings of the same match.
Ajinkya Rahane was the in-charge after Kohli’s departure, after the 36/9 debacle, there was no looking back for the Men in blue as the touring Indian team went on to register a historic 2-1 Test series victory against the star-studded Australian team.
The injured Indian team suffered casualties in every match, the skipper Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara were the only two players who featured in all the four matches of the iconic Test series. India’s last experienced pacer was sidelined for the Gabba Test due to abdominal strain.
The last match of the series was to be played at the Gabba, which is considered to be Australia’s fortress, the hosts were unbeatable in Brisbane since 1988 which gave the Aussies an edge over the Indians in the series decider. India entered the Gabba without their best batsman of the last decade and their experienced bowling line-up. The hosts had to take on the Aussies in their fortress with the inexperienced bowling line-up. The Aussies were favourites to win the Test match but the home team lacked intent and courage which the visitors had in them. From taking a dozen of blows on their body to chasing a target of 328 on a bouncy Gabba pitch, the new Indian team showed bravery and conviction while playing at the venue where the home team was invincible.
After the third Test match, the series went down to 1-1 with one match to go, India at least needed to draw the match to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Shubman Gill set the tempo of the chase early on Day 5, Cheteshwar Pujara’s rock-solid defence laid the foundation for the chase while Rishabh Pant’s intent took the visitors over the finishing line and beat Australia at their fortress where they were undefeated for the past three decades.
