Golden Globe Nomination Before Release

Squid Game 2 made headlines with its unexpected nomination for “Best Television Series – Drama” at the Golden Globe Awards, even before its release on December 26. Judges had early access to episodes, leading to this groundbreaking recognition.

Although the series didn’t win during the January 5 ceremony, director Hwang Dong Hyuk shared his mixed feelings about the nomination.

“I didn’t have any expectations for awards regarding Season 2 when I decided to divide it into two parts—Seasons 2 and 3. Since the story isn’t complete and the message I wanted to convey hasn’t been fully revealed, I thought it would be difficult to win an award in this state,” he explained.

Hwang also expressed gratitude for the honor, calling it “unexpected.” Reflecting on his absence from Season 1’s awards journey due to the Golden Globes boycott, he added, “This time, I’m happy and grateful to have the opportunity to attend.”

Casting Criticism Over T.O.P’s Role

The casting of T.O.P as Thanos, a drug-addicted rapper, sparked debate. Hwang defended his choice, saying the character was designed to balance the show’s serious tone with humor.

“I needed a light-hearted character to balance the mood. Since his character was awkward and couldn’t rap well, I had a feeling he would be seen as unfavorable,” he admitted.

Hwang expressed frustration, stating, “It was so unpleasant to see. It ruins the meaning of the work itself.”

Park’s agency, BH Entertainment, later clarified that the post was an accident, claiming it happened while he was checking DMs. They assured fans he would be more cautious in the future.

Looking Ahead to Season 3

Despite the controversies, Hwang remains optimistic about Squid Game 3. He believes the series’ full narrative will resonate more strongly with audiences and potentially earn greater recognition.

“When the story’s conclusion is revealed, it might be time to aim for awards,” he hinted.

Squid Game 2 continues to spark global conversations, reflecting its massive cultural impact and the challenges of maintaining its legacy.
