Spain's young talent Lamine Yamal expressed in a televised interview on Thursday that he hopes to "never" leave Barcelona, as he aims to become "a legend" at the club. Yamal made his debut for Barcelona at the age of 15 in April 2023 and quickly rose to prominence, becoming a pivotal player for the Catalan team last season.
"I hope I never leave (Barcelona), I want to be a legend at Barca," the 17-year-old stated during the popular show 'El Hormiguero' on Antena 3, a private Spanish television station. The winger, who celebrated his 17th birthday in July, played a significant role for Spain as they secured a record fourth Euro title in 2024, making him the youngest player ever to compete and score in the tournament's history.
At Barcelona, he is hailed as the most thrilling youth academy prospect, drawing comparisons to fellow La Masia alumnus Lionel Messi.
"Being compared to the greatest of all time is amazing and indicates I'm on the right path, but I focus on being myself and hope to be remembered for who I am," said Yamal.
"Reaching the levels of Messi's career will be extremely challenging, so I wish to be recognized simply as Lamine Yamal," he added.
The teenager mentioned that he is managing well with the attention he has received following his impressive performances at Euro 2024, including a spectacular goal in the semi-final victory over France.
