Vinesh Phogat’s Appeal Hearing Set for Friday; Medal Decision Expected by End of Olympics

On August 9, Friday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that it will deliver its decision regarding Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the women's 50 kg final before the conclusion of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Vinesh was disqualified on August 7 after being found 100 grams overweight during the weigh-in before the final on Wednesday. The case is currently under review, with Sole Arbitrator Dr. Annaelle Bennett overseeing the process.

"An application was submitted to the CAS Ad hoc Division at 16:45 CEST on August 7, 2024, by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat (the Applicant), challenging the decision by United World Wrestling (UWW) to disqualify her due to a failed second weigh-in before the Women's Freestyle 50kg gold medal match, which was scheduled to start at 18:15 CEST that day (the Challenged Decision)."

"The procedure is still in progress, and the Applicant has stated her request to overturn the Challenged Decision and to be awarded a (shared) silver medal. The case has been assigned to the Hon. Dr. Annabelle Bennett AC SC (AUS) as the Sole Arbitrator, who will conduct a hearing with the involved parties today. The Sole Arbitrator's ruling is anticipated to be issued before the end of the Olympic Games," the statement read.
