Before this match, He Bing Jiao had a slight edge over P.V. Sindhu with an 11-9 lead in their head-to-head record, including a win in their last game at the 2022 Asian Games quarterfinals. However, Sindhu had previously beaten He in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Before this match, Sindhu had beaten world No. 73 Kristin Kuuba of Estonia with scores of 21-5 and 21-10, finishing first in her group. This win showed Sindhu's strong performance and earned her a spot in the knockout stages of the Olympics for the third time in a row.He Bing Jiao will now compete against Chen Yufei of China on August 3.
