Chennai Super Kings' beloved 'Thala' has etched his name in history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he takes the helm for the IPL 2025 match against KKR team. Following CSK's main captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, suffering a hairline fracture on his elbow, the leadership role has been passed to Dhoni, who is holding the record for being the joint-most successful captain in IPL history, boasting five titles.

As CSK played against KKR at Chepauk, Dhoni has shattered 2 additional records in this prestigious T20 league. He became the first 'uncapped player' in IPL history to lead this franchise.

Despite being a veteran with over 500 international appearances, Dhoni got the 'uncapped player' designation due to some new rule implemented by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) before the 18th edition of the league. Since he hasn't participated in any international games in the last five years, he was given the 'uncapped player' status because of this new regulation.

Another record Dhoni achieved was becoming the oldest captain in the IPL history. At the age of 43 years, he took on the captaincy role once again, also surpassing his previous record. Dhoni, at 41 years and 325 days has set the record for the oldest captain leading a franchise during the IPL 2023 season.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming remarked that Dhoni was enthusiastic to take on the captaincy responsibilities once it was confirmed that Ruturaj would be out for the whole season.

"He had no hesitation to step up and help guide us out of this if we can," Fleming said. "So that was never a doubt. We'll look at replacements. We've got some good players in the squad that have been with us a while, so we'll look from within first. But yeah, there is an opportunity to see how we can enhance the squad probably moving forward into subsequent years."
