A new facet of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions has come to light. Reports from ESPN Cricinfo and Cricbuzz direct that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) plans to keep South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen for ₹23 crore.

This amount soars the ₹18 crore cap set by the IPL Governing Council for the first retention allotment by ₹5 crore. The distribution of funds suggests that franchises can keep back players for more or less than the specified slabs, as long as the total amount spent remains within the ₹75 crore retention purse.

While IPL regulations state that the first retention should be ₹18 crore, the 2nd ₹14 crore, the 3rd ₹11 crore, the 4th ₹18 crore, the 5th ₹14 crore, and uncapped players ₹4 crore, franchises have the pliability to allocate the money among players as they see fit.

For example, a franchise can opt to pay more than ₹18 crore for their 1st retention while offering less than ₹11 crore for their 3rd retention, as long as their total expenditure reaches ₹43 crore (the total for 3 retentions: 18 + 14 + 11).

Additionally, if a franchise keeps back 5 players for an amount less than the designated ₹75 crore (from a total purse of ₹120 crore), the total designated amount will still be deducted.

“Retention withdrawal will be based on the overall total rather than per player. If the overall amount exceeds ₹75 crore, the actual amount will be deducted. If it's less than ₹75 crore, ₹75 crore will still be deducted,” a report said regarding the retention rule.

This flexibility in how retention fees can be assigned significantly benefits franchises in arranging higher or lower payments for players they wish to keep, without altering the overall budget.
