In 2020, the Indian contingent was made up of 124 athletes, the largest that the country had sent to the Games. India also won seven medals, their biggest haul in a single Olympics - including Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold medal in the men’s javelin throw.

While in the upcoming edition of the Olympics happening in Paris, India will look forward to elevet its medal tally and squad strength throughout the sports & games. Reportedly, there are 60 players finalised to send into the Paris Olympics.

Trap shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta, who won India’s first quota place at the ISSF world championships, was the first to make the Paris Olympics cut. Indian shooters, in fact, went on to secure a quota in every Olympic shooting category for the first time. Race walkers Priyanka Goswami and Akshdeep Singh were the first Indians to qualify for athletics events at Paris 2024.

Aman Sehrawat and Deepak Punia to lead the men's freestyle wrestling contingent at World Olympic Qualifiers in Istanbul, Türkiye on Saturday. In sports like shooting and wrestling, quotas are won by countries and not individual athletes. This means the athlete who clinched the quota can be replaced by another, leading up to the Games.

In the men's 20km race walk, seven Indian athletes breached the Paris Olympics 2024 qualifying standard. However, each national federation can send a maximum of three athletes in the event to the Olympics. Murali Sreeshankar managed to breach the qualifying standards in men's long jump but won't be travelling to Paris as a knee injury has ruled him out for the entire 2024 season. In badminton, where players can make the cut based on rankings, NOCs will have to confirm that they will use the quota places by May 24.
