After choosing to bat first, Sri Lanka recovered from 101/5 to post a respectable total of 230 runs. Dunith Wellalage's fifty and three crucial partnerships played a key role in helping the hosts stay competitive against a strong Indian team. Chasing 231, captain Rohit Sharma continued his excellent form from last month, scoring a rapid 33-ball half-century. India was well-placed at 71 without loss, but Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka emerged as the hero with his decisive bowling.

In a dramatic finish, Shivam Dube nearly secured the win for India. With just one run needed and a wicket in hand after Dube's dismissal, Arshdeep Singh attempted a big shot but was LBW, resulting in a draw. Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, watching from the dressing room, were stunned as the match slipped away at the last moment.

The total proved more substantial than it initially appeared due to conditions favoring slow bowlers. Wellalage's 67 not out from 65 balls included seven fours and two sixes, while Nissanka contributed 56 off 75 balls. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel (2/33) and wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav (1/33) were economical, and seamers Shivam Dube, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj each took a wicket. The last 20 overs saw 118 runs scored.

In the chase, Rohit Sharma scored 58 off 47 balls, and contributions from Axar Patel (33) and KL Rahul (31) were not enough to finish the game. Charith Asalanka (3/30) and Wanindu Hasaranga (3/58) were the standout bowlers for Sri Lanka.
