After the conclusion of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia, former head coach Sanjay Bangar shared his thoughts on India's lineup in the 5-match Test series, highlighting the serious combination of Nitish Kumar Reddy alongside either Ravindra Jadeja or Washington Sundar.
"Nitish Reddy's unexpected performance put the team in a dilemma. The combination of Nitish Reddy with Washington Sundar or Ravindra Jadeja created confusion. When there is an in-form player, it's hard to drop him. The team management seemed to react as the series progressed rather than being proactive. On those pitches, decisions should have been made based on the immediate requirements. A more proactive approach could have resulted in better team combinations," Sanjay Bangar stated while speaking on Star Sports.
All-rounder Nitish had an amazing series, both with the bat and his pace bowling. He finished as the 4-highest run-scorer with 298 runs over 5 matches and nine innings, maintaining an average of 37.25, which included a remarkable century in the Boxing Day Test. His counter-attacking innings were really memorable, and he also claimed 5 wickets at an average of 38.00, with his best figures being 2/32.
In contrast, Jadeja collected 135 runs in five innings during the recently concluded BGT series, averaging 27.00, while securing just 4 wickets across three matches at an average of 54.50.
On the other end, Sundar scored 114 runs in six innings throughout the 5-match Test series, averaging 22.80, and he took only 3 wickets in three matches at an average of 38.67.
India started the series with a historic victory in Perth but they couldn't maintain their momentum, finally losing the series 1-3. This marked Australia's 1st Border-Gavaskar Trophy victory in a decade, with their previous win occurring in 2014-15.
