According to a report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to discuss if the team requires a new captain. The report indicated that the BCCI will convene with head coach Amol Muzumdar and the selection committee to discuss upcoming strategies and Harmanpreet's duty as captain. “The BCCI will surely analyze whether it's time for a new captain going forward.
The board has given the team everything they needed, and we believe it's very important to have a new face to lead the team now. Harmanpreet will still remain an important part of the squad, but the BCCI feels it's time for a transformation,” a source from the Indian board shared.
Former Indian women's cricket team captain Mithali Raj too weighed in on whether Harmanpreet should continue as skipper after the team's poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024.
"It's up to the BCCI and the selectors to decide, but if they are considering a change, this would be the perfect moment. Delaying it can cause trouble with another World Cup approaching in two years. If serious action is not taken now, it might be too close to the tournament later.
Smriti is an option, given her long tenure as vice-captain, but I personally feel someone like Jemimah, who is only 24, could be a better option. She has the ability to contribute for a longer period in T20s and brings a lot of liveliness to the field. I was really stunned by her performance in this tournament," the former captain expressed in an interview with PTI.
