Gavaskar's Unpredicted Support for Sundar's Pune Test Incorporation

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar made a surprising turnabout after initially criticizing the decision to replace Kuldeep Yadav with Washington Sundar for the 2nd Test match against New Zealand on Thursday.

Washington was brought into the Indian team following the defeat in the first Test in Bengaluru, and Gavaskar had remarked that his selection was a 'panic' resolution. However, the versatile player delivered an outstanding performance, capturing 7 wickets and putting India in a strong position. 

Gavaskar himself was taken abruptly by Sundar's display and commented during the match, saying, "What a marvellous selection. He is included in the XI because he adds depth to batting and bowling."

Previously, Gavaskar was not convinced by India's choice to make three adjustments to their playing XI. KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj were excluded for the 2nd Test, allowing Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep to step into the lineup.

"It seems to be a bit of a panic move by Team India. It's rare to make 3 changes to the squad," Gavaskar said during the broadcast after the toss on Thursday.

India is trailing 0-1 in the 3-match series after going through an eight-wicket loss in the first Test last week, where Rohit Sharma and his squad were dismissed for just 46 runs in their first innings.

"I don't see many teams opting for three changes unless there are injury issues. The inclusion of Washington Sundar indicates they are concerned about their batting. More than his bowling, they require his batting prowess down the order as added security," Gavaskar elaborated

"Yes, there's considerable discussion regarding the left-handed batsmen in the New Zealand lineup, but I would have chosen Kuldeep Yadav, who can also deliver the ball away from a left-hander," Gavaskar winded up by saying.
