Vinesh Phogat's coaching staff and support team made extensive efforts to ensure her weight was under the 50kg limit before the official weigh-in for her historic gold medal bout against Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States on Wednesday at the Paris 2024 Olympics, but their attempts fell short. According to the technical representative from United World Wrestling, the bronze medal match will now feature Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki and Ukrainian competitor Oksana Livach in the repechage round.
“Vinesh failed the weigh-in on the second day. Per Article 11 of the International Wrestling Rules, Vinesh will be replaced by the wrestler who lost to her in the semi-final,” the representative explained.
“Thus, Guzman Lopez Yusneylis will take her place in the final. Consequently, the repechage match between Susaki Yui and Livach Oksana will determine the bronze medal winner.” Despite all efforts, The Sportstar reported that the coaches resorted to cutting Vinesh's hair and even tried to induce bleeding, but these measures did not achieve the necessary results.
As a result of these extreme measures, Vinesh became weakened, frail, and dehydrated. She was taken to a medical facility within the Olympic Village after experiencing dizziness and briefly losing consciousness.
