Celebrating One Year of Kohli’s Iconic 51st ODI Century Moment

Kohli’s 50th ODI century was not his only achievement in the game. He also became the highest run-scorer in a single World Cup edition, which surpasses Tendulkar’s 2003 World Cup record.

Virat Kohli made history on November 15, 2023, during the ODI World Cup semifinals against the New Zealand team. He became the 1st-ever batter to score 50 centuries in 1 Day Internationals (ODIs), surpassing his idol, Sachin Tendulkar.

The historic moment occured when Kohli took a double off New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson, moving from 98 to 100, prompting a big celebration at Wankhede Stadium. The happiness of this big  achievement was further heightened by the fact that Tendulkar, whose record Kohli had just broken, was present to witness the occasion.

Adding to the importance of the day, it marked the anniversary of Tendulkar’s 2nd-last Test match, in which he played his final international innings for India against the West Indies at the exact venue. Virat Kohli’s record-breaking feat only added another wonderful  chapter to the rich legacy of Indian cricket. 

Kohli’s 50th ODI century was not his only achievement in the game. He also became the highest run-scorer in a single World Cup edition, which surpasses Tendulkar’s 2003 World Cup record. Kohli is the 1st player to top the list for most runs in a World Cup, further cementing his position as one of the game’s best players.

With 594 runs in the tournament, Kohli concluded well ahead of South Africa’s Quinton de Kock (591 runs) and New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra (565 runs). His consistent form in the tournament was combined with an incredible average of 99, was further boosted by his century in the semifinal which also raised his average to an outstanding 101.57. 

Virat Kohli has undoubtedly secured his place as one of cricket’s all-time legends. From shattering records to being an inspiration for millions, Kohli has reinvented modern cricket. His innumerable contributions to the game, combined with his relentless passion, determination, and extraordinary skills, have made his legacy truly exceptional.
