India's wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant quitted the field due to a knee injury on Day 2 of the 1st Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru. Pant's wound led to substitute wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel taking over behind the stumps for India for the rest of Day 2.

On Day 3, Jurel continued in that role as Rishabh Pant remained under the observation of the BCCI's medical team. The Indian board announced on Friday morning that Pant would miss the whole day's match. He was hit on his right knee during the 37th over of New Zealand's innings when a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja sharply came in and hit him while Devon Conway was at the crease.

Pant had to leave the field, and captain Rohit Sharma told the media after Day 2 that there was some deep swelling, and the team wanted to avoid any risks.

He was replaced by Dhruv Jurel for the whole day.

Pant had previously undergone many surgeries on his right knee along with a serious car accident in December 2022.

"Sadly, the ball hit him directly on the knee cap, the same leg that had surgery. He has some swelling and the muscles are quite weak at the moment," Rohit elaborated to the media on Thursday.

“It’s a precautional measure. We just don't want to take any risks. Rishabh is also cautious because of the extensive surgery he had on that leg," he said.

"So, that's the reason why he went off the field. Hopefully, he can recover by today, and we’ll see him on the field tomorrow," Rohit concluded.
