Tamil cinema's beloved Thalapathy Vijay has declared his entry into politics, unveiling his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, on February 2. Surprising his fans, the actor also revealed his decision to bid farewell to the film industry after completing two upcoming projects, including 'GOAT' and an untitled film.

Vijay Thalapathy, a celebrated figure in the South Indian film industry, has been at the centre of speculation regarding his political aspirations in recent months. The announcement of his political party comes after a general body meeting, with plans for his party members to contest in the 2026 elections.

In a detailed statement, Vijay expressed that politics is not merely a job for him but a sacred responsibility. He emphasized his desire to learn the intricacies of politics thoroughly and announced his intention to step into the role of a full-fledged politician in Tamil Nadu. He plans to fulfil his film commitments as a way of expressing gratitude to the people of Tamil Nadu before fully dedicating himself to politics.

Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, will abstain from participating in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and will not extend support to any other candidates. The actor, often referred to as Thalapathy (meaning General or Commander), aims to bring about a selfless, transparent, visionary, and efficient administration, free from corruption, caste, and religious differences.

Political analyst C Rajeev stated, "Vijay has the top fan base in Tamil Nadu, just a little below Rajinikanth, and in the days to come with his political party, he will emerge stronger. The BJP is likely to align itself with Vijay, and this would be a formidable combination for the BJP to win in Tamil Nadu."

Tamil Nadu has a history of actors venturing into mainstream politics, with figures like MGR, Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa, and more recently, Kamal Haasan. Vijay's entry adds another dimension to the political landscape, and the state awaits the unveiling of his party's flag, symbol, and other details following recognition from the Election Commission.
