President Yoon Suk Yeol Declares Martial Law, Faces Intense Backlash

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on December 3, 2024, citing threats from “pro-North, anti-state forces.” This was the first martial law declaration since 1979 and was quickly overturned by the National Assembly hours later.

President Yoon addressed the nation late on December 3, explaining his decision to implement martial law:

Dear citizens. I hereby declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threats posed by the North Korean communist forces and to eradicate the shameless pro-North, anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people... This measure is essential for ensuring the enduring continuity of the free Republic of Korea... I place my trust solely in you, the people, and I will dedicate my entire being to defending the free Republic of Korea. Please believe in me. Thank you.

Martial law, which involved deploying military forces, lasted until 4:30 AM on December 4, when President Yoon withdrew it after the National Assembly unanimously rejected the measure.

Critics argue that Yoon’s declaration stemmed from political frustration. With his administration unable to pass legislation due to the opposition party’s overwhelming majority, Yoon referred to their actions as “legislative manipulation” and “budget obstruction.” He also criticized repeated impeachment efforts, saying:

I urge the National Assembly to immediately cease the reckless acts of paralyzing state functions through repeated impeachments, legislative manipulation, and budget obstruction.

The opposition has labeled Yoon’s actions as unconstitutional, pushing for impeachment and even considering rebellion charges. If rebellion is pursued, Yoon could face severe penalties, including life imprisonment.

Here is what Yoon Suk Yeol Impeachment Coalition of National Assembly Members said:

President Yoon has opened the door to impeachment himself. Now, impeachment of President Yoon has become something that must be done.

We will push forward with the impeachment motion and prepare for what comes after impeachment swiftly. Due to the reckless declaration of martial law, the Yoon administration is now over. The president and those around him have clearly shown how unconstitutional and anti-democratic they are.
