Netflix’s Dabba Cartel has received a very positive response from the viewers for its story and display of strong female characters. South actress Jyothika, who is part of the series opened up about the difficulties of female actors working in Indian Cinema.

In a recent interview, Jyothika said, “Since I was 28, I haven’t acted alongside a major star or hero. Today, directors are making big films for male stars, but there are no filmmakers creating significant films for female actors anymore.”

She even talked about the challenges that a South Indian actress faces, “In South Indian cinema, the journey of an actress is fraught with difficulties. It’s a battle that she fights alone.”

In the interview, Jyothika also talked about the female characters in Dabba Cartel and how the entertainment industry is still regressive. She said, “I think we all have, I believe it starts with our mothers when we see a strong woman raising another woman. My house help is my biggest support system and enabler, she is actually the lady who takes charge of my home and that’s how I can step out of my house to work. Everyone puts in a lot for all of us to rise.”

She added, “I think the industry is still very regressive when it comes to representing forty-plus women. But very few people are actually breaking through now. My personal favourite is Meryl Streep and look where she is now at this age. It will take us a while, but it has just started and there are so many stories to tell about women.”
