Smith, Butler partnership powers Rajasthan Royals to a comprehensive seven-wicket victory

Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets in the 37th match of the Indian Premier League in Abu Dhabi at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Jos Butler’s 70 off 48 balls anchored RR to earn their second victory against CSK this season. With this win RR secures the fifth position on the points table.

Rajasthan couldn’t start the below-par run chase of 126 as planned as they lost their openers within the powerplay. Ben Stokes was looking to accelerate in the powerplay but fell prey to Deepak Chahar on the other end Robin Uthappa was struggling in the swinging condition and he was sent back to the pavilion by Josh Hazlewood. Sanju Samson’s string of low scores continues as he got out for a duck after Mahendra Singh Dhoni takes a single handed stunner behind the stumps on Chahar’s bowling. It was Steve Smith and Butler who stitched a match-winning partnership of 96 and took their team home. The wicket-keeper batsman’s attacking knock along with the captain Smith’s supporting 26 off 34 balls was more than enough for the Royals to seal a convincing victory.

After winning the toss, Chennai opted to bat, the men in yellow had an underwhelming powerplay as they lost two wickets within the first six overs. Sam Curran’s 22 at the strike rate of 88 along with Faf du Plessis’ 10 off 9 balls couldn’t provide a solid start. It was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s run-a-ball 28 along with Ravindra Jadeja’s 35 off 30 balls led CSK to a respectable total of 125 after losing five wickets.

For Rajasthan, Shreyas Gopal was the star with the ball as he took one wicket and conceding 14 runs in his allotted four overs. Jofra Archer, Rahul Tewatia and Kartik Tyagi also pocketed one wicket each with an impressive economy rate. Butler was adjudged as the Man of the match for his 78, his innings decorated with seven fours and two sixes.
