The Shahrukh Khan led Knight Riders group is reported to have invested in the new American T20 franchise based tournament – Major League Cricket (MLC) which is expected to kick off from 2022. The Knight Riders group which is co-owned by Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta already has a team in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) named Trinbago Knight Riders apart from the Kolkata based franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The group is reported to have brought the Los Angeles based franchise which is expected to be known as the LA Knight Riders. “For several years now, we have been expanding the Knight Riders brand globally, and closely watching the potential of T20 cricket in USA. We are convinced that the Major League Cricket has all the pieces in place to execute on its plans and we look forward to making our partnership an enormous success in the coming years,” said Shahrukh Khan.
Besides owing a team, the Knight Riders group will also hold a significant stake in the tournament and they will play the role of a consultant to help the US Cricket to run the six team tournament. The MLC is a unique in a way that the franchise owners in the tournament also get to hold stakes in the tournament compared to other T20 leagues wherein you just plainly own the team.
The Knight Riders group is considered by many as the only global brand in T20 cricket and by expanding their reach to the United States of America and putting efforts to develop the game of cricket there, they have truly justified the tag.
