Exploring the Asteroid Bennu

The most critical part of the mission was the sample collection, which took place on October 20, 2020. The spacecraft descended to Bennu's surface and used its Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) to slowly scoop up regolith, or surface material, from the asteroid. The delicate operation had to be performed in less than 16 seconds to avoid any potential hazards on the asteroid's rugged terrain.

NASA engineers and scientists carefully designed the collection process to ensure the sample's integrity. The spacecraft's robotic arm precisely touched Bennu's surface, firing a burst of nitrogen gas that lifted the regolith into the sample collection chamber. The TAGSAM system successfully collected more than 2 ounces (60 grams) of material, securing it within the spacecraft for its journey back to Earth.

The Return to Earth and Scientific Potential

After nearly two years of orbiting Bennu, OSIRIS-REx bid farewell to the asteroid on May 10, 2021, and started its journey back to Earth. The capsule containing the asteroid sample landed safely in the Utah desert on September 24, 2023. The sample collected from Bennu holds immense scientific potential. It can unlock secrets dating back billions of years, providing insights into the early Solar System's formation and the processes that led to the emergence of life on Earth. 

Scientists will analyze the sample for traces of organic molecules, water, and other compounds that could hold the key to understanding life's origin.
