It was the year 1998 which changed the fortune of Manoj Bajpayee with enduring performances in Satya as Bhiku Matre. Yes, the actor who has struggled for so many years and was rejected so many times, Manoj did not lose hope and went on to do small roles with big stars ( he played a a dacoit in Shekhar Kapur’s acclaimed drama Bandit Queen). Satya also boasted off solid performances from Urmila Matondkar, Shefali Shah, Chakravarthi and Saurabh Shukla. Songs like “Kallu Mama” and Bheegha Bheegha Pani” which was brilliantly composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and penned by Gulzar, Satya became a solid hit with a strong word of mouth reviews. Screenplay written by Anurag Kashyap and Saurabh Shukla was another highlight of the film.
Satya was released on 3rd July, 1998 at 85 screens to Rs 25 lakhs. The action-drama collected Rs 1.74 crores in its first week and went onto collect Rs 14.08 crores against a budget of Rs 3 crores and turned out to be “Super-Hit” at the box office.
