Ahead of the Indian Premier League 2021, five cities have been shortlisted for the upcoming edition. Mumbai is yet to be confirmed amidst the COVID-19 situation in the region.
The forthcoming season of the IPL will be played entirely in India, the five venues shortlisted for the tournament are Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Bangalore. The tournament is likely to commence on April 10. A report from Cricbuzz revealed the details while an IPL source also explained Mumbai’s unavailability.
“Mumbai is still not final and it is because the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, headed by Uddhav Thackeray, has not yet given the final go-ahead.”
The cases in Maharashtra has been increasing on a daily basis in recent weeks. The state registered more than 8000 cases for a third consecutive day on Friday and the state’s daily count has been the highest in the country. Mumbai’s availability for IPL 2021 is unlikely considering the COVID-19 cases. Reports had suggested that BCCI was planning to execute the entire season in one state itself.
Lucknow could be the new venue where IPL 2021 could take place. The city isn’t currently included on the initial shortlist, but BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla would like some of the IPL games to be played in Uttar Pradesh. Crowds will be allowed for the IPL 2021 games as they have been also allowed for the on-going England tour of the India series.
