Odd couples sometimes makes it an even watch. Audience loved pairing of Irrfan Khan-Nimrat Kaur in The Lunchbox, Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu in Cheeni Kum which made the film an interesting watch. More than the good-looks, I guess the chemistry between the lead pair lit up the silver screen with a spark.

Based on the book of the same name written by Kunal Basu, The Japanese Wife is a simple, heart-touching love story which shows the meaning of true love

Marriages are made in heaven but for Snehamoy (Rahul Bose) and Miyage (Chigusa Takaku), it was made through words as they became a pen-pal. In The Japanese Wife, love is defined between two people who belong to different background, different thinking and different culture.

Joji Movie Review – Nail-biting, Taut-Thriller That Keeps You Guessing

Directed by Aparna Sen, who made Mr and Mrs Iyer, the theme of the The Japanese Wife is simple yet noble, set in the background of on Bali Island in the West Bengal Sunderbans about simple, ordinary and lower-class family which will remind of classic movies by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. The movie is intrinsic to its core right from the beginning with hilarious moments enough to tickle your funny-bone. The initial reel will definitely bring down the house when the boy speaks to the girl through narration going on in the background.

Run Movie Review – A Delightful Suspense Thriller With Commendable Performances

The interaction between Rahul Bose and Moushumi Chatterjee is engaging, the kite flying competition is beautifully portrayed has been executed brilliantly that would put a smile on your face. Hats off to Aparna Sen (also the script writter) for making the best out of the novel written by Kunal Basu. Background score and music is limited yet convincing. Art direction by Goutam Basu representing a typical Bengali household is worth-mentioning. Cinematography by Anay Goswami capturing the essence of Sunderban in West Bengal is eye-catching.

Coming to the performances, Rahul Bose does a fabulous job as a push-over, introvert loyal husband. Moushumi Chatterjee as Maashi gives the best performance of her career. Raima Sen was brilliant. Chigusa Takaku was lovely.

If you are looking for a nice romantic date with your partner, you might choose The Japanese Wife for a perfect evening.
