New Delhi: Intensifying his criticism of the BJP ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal accused that party of withholding its chief ministerial candidate announcement due to fear of losing. He furthermore alleged that the BJP had already chosen former South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri, who was denied a Lok Sabha ticket but is now contesting against Chief Minister Atishi from the Kalkaji constituency in the Assembly elections, as the chief ministerial candidate.
The BJP replied by stating that Kejriwal's bail conditions would stop him from becoming chief minister and added that the party doesn't require a face, as its symbol, the lotus, is enough.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Kejriwal stated in Hindi, "The AAP has been clear from the beginning that I will be the chief ministerial candidate. The BJP's Central Election Committee met yesterday and sources tell us the party has probably decided to name Ramesh Bidhuri as the chief ministerial candidate. Sources said his name will be declared in a day or two. I congratulate Mr Bidhuri and, on behalf of the people of Delhi, urge him to tell us about the work he has done as an MP for ten years. He should also lay out his vision for Delhi and the people of Delhi.
The former Delhi chief minister also suggested that once Mr Bidhuri's name is officially declared, a public debate should take place between them.
This will make the vision of the respective people and parties clear to the people of Delhi and India. We will wait, maybe the announcement of Mr Bidhuri's name will happen in a day or two," he elaborated.
Bidhuri had ignited controversy in September 2023 when he made Islamophobic remarks against Amroha MP Danish Ali, causing a major uproar. After his candidacy for the Delhi Assembly elections was announced in the beginning in this month, his comments in regards to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi's cheeks and Atishi's surname change created another stir. These comments led to a reprimand from the BJP, and he later asked for an apology for some of them.
In reply to Kejriwal's statements, BJP leader RP Singh attacked the AAP chief, reminding him of the conditions placed on his bail in the Delhi liquor police case. He also referenced the alleged lavishness at the Delhi chief minister's official residence, which the opposition has jokingly referred to as 'Sheeshmahal.'
