Five Indians are listed in the TIME’s Most Influential People Of 2020 amongst these five are actor Ayushmann Khurrana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and 82-year-old Bilkis who was the face of Antti-CAA, NRC protest at Shaheen Bagh in the capital city of India. The annual list of TIME’s magazine includes personalities who are pioneers, artists, titans, leaders, and icons from around the world “who have had the most impact this year”.
The other Indian personalities featured on the magazine’s list include Google CEO Sundar Pichai and clinical microbiology professor Ravindra Gupta who found a cure for AIDS.
While PM Modi is listed under the “Leaders” category, Shaheen Bagh Dadi has been featured in the “Icons” category on the list. PM Modi, who celebrated his 70 birthday this month, was earlier featured on the magazine 2017 list as well. Also, Ayushmann Khurrana turned out to be the youngest Indian to be featured in TIME’s list. The 36-year-old actor is one of the only three international actors featured in the TIME list of influential people.
However, the most astonishing name is the list was of the 82-year-old shaheen bagh bilkis, one of the most leading figures in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA in 2019 which continued till March 24th, 2020. She sat with hundreds of women under a tent at the Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh anti-CAA/ NRC sit-in protest for over three months. Within several days, Bilkis and the other elderly women who participated in the protest became the guiding light of resistance and hope.
The profile of Shaheen Bagh Dadi in the TIME magazine list is written by journalist and writer Rana Ayyub, the profile reads, she (Bilkis) “became the voice of the marginalized in India. With prayer beads in one hand and the national flag in the other, Bilkis became the voice of the marginalized in India, an 82-year-old who would sit at a protest site from 8 a.m. to midnight.”
