On Mumbai’s Muhammad Ali Road, the posters of France’s President Emmanuel Macron were pasted. This incident took place after his remarks on Islam and his defense of caricature depicting the Prophet Mohammed he has described Islam as “a religion in crisis” this has irked several Muslim-Islamic nations.
Several video clips of vehicles driving and people walking over the posters have shared and gone viral on social media. One of the videos shows people marching to condemn Mr. Macron’s comments – by holding placards that read “Our Prophet Muhammad, Our Honour” – and one man was seen hitting the image of the French President with slippers.
This incident has raised a political issue in Maharashtra. The opposition party BJP slammed the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi government for “supporting Islam terrorists” They have also demanded strict action against the agitators. Though the police quickly removed the posters as of now no case has been registered.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya told news agency ANI, “When France speaks out against Islamic terror then here (in Maharashtra) the government stands behind people supporting fanatic Islam terrorists?”
Similar protests have been conducted in different parts of the country like Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal where a Congress MLA had participated, at the Aligarh Muslim University in UP, and in Punjab’s Ludhiana. In addition to that, the hashtag #BoycottFrenchProducts was trending on Twitter.
All these incidents took place after Prime Ministre Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and solidarity for the victim’s family in the terror attack and the citizens of France.
