Here’s a list of Indians who have finished fourth at the Olympic Games:

 

Randhir Shinde – Antwerp 1920 Olympics, Men’s 54kg Freestyle Wrestling

At the Antwerp 1920 Olympics, wrestler Randhir Shinde lost the bronze medal playoff in the men’s featherweight freestyle division to Philip Bernard of Great Britain. He had previously defeated Henry Inman of Great Britain and Sam Gerson of the USA. If awarded today, a fourth-place finish could have earned him a medal, as wrestling now awards two bronze medals. 

Keshav Mangave – Helsinki 1952 Olympics, Men’s 62kg Freestyle Wrestling

Freestyle wrestler Keshav Mangave advanced to Round 5 in the men’s 62kg event but lost to Josiah Henson of the USA. A win would have placed him in the top three competing for medals. Mangave ended up finishing fourth.

Team India – Melbourne 1956 Olympics, Men’s Football

The Indian men’s football team had its best Olympic performance at Melbourne 1956, reaching the bronze medal match. After defeating Australia in the quarter-finals, where Neville D'Souza became the first Asian to score a hat-trick, India lost to Yugoslavia in the semi-finals and then fell 3-0 to Bulgaria in the bronze medal match, finishing fourth. 

Milkha Singh – Rome 1960 Olympics, Men’s 400m Athletics

Legendary sprinter Milkha Singh narrowly missed a medal in the men’s 400m sprint at the Rome 1960 Olympics, finishing fourth, just 0.1 seconds behind the bronze medalist. 

Prem Nath – Munich 1972 Olympics, Men’s 57kg Freestyle Wrestling

Freestyle wrestler Prem Nath fought through seven rounds and accumulated nine penalty points, narrowly missing a medal. Medals were awarded based on the fewest penalties, and Nath finished just outside the top three.

Sudesh Kumar – Munich 1972 Olympics, Men’s 52kg Freestyle Wrestling

Sudesh Kumar also fell short of a medal at the Munich 1972 Olympics, finishing fourth in the men’s 52kg freestyle wrestling event with seven penalty points. 

PT Usha – Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, Women’s 400m Hurdles Athletics

After Milkha Singh’s close call in 1960, PT Usha came close to a medal in the women’s 400m hurdles at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, missing the bronze by one-hundredth of a second. 

Rajinder Singh – Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, Men’s 74kg Freestyle Wrestling

The pattern of Indian wrestlers coming close to medals continued at the LA 1984 Games, with Rajinder Singh losing the bronze medal match to Saban Sejdi in the final round after being in second place until then.

Leander Paes/Mahesh Bhupathi – Athens 2004 Olympics, Men’s Doubles Tennis

At the Athens 2004 Olympics, the renowned Indian tennis duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi lost in the men’s doubles semi-finals after defeating pairs including Roger Federer and Andy Roddick. They fell 7(7)-6(5), 4-6, 16-14 to Croatia’s Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic in the bronze medal match. 

 

Kunjarani Devi – Athens 2004 Olympics, Women’s 48kg Weightlifting

Kunjarani Devi narrowly missed a medal at the Athens 2004 Olympics in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event. She lifted a total of 190kg but finished just outside the medal zone, with the bronze medalist lifting 200kg. 

 

Joydeep Karmakar – London 2012 Olympics, Men’s 50m Rifle Prone Shooting

Indian shooter Joydeep Karmakar, after qualifying for the final round in seventh place at the London 2012 Olympics, moved up in the rankings but ended fourth in the men’s 50m rifle prone shooting event with a final score of 699.1, behind third-placed Rajmond Debevec. 

 

Abhinav Bindra – Rio 2016 Olympics, Men’s 10m Air Rifle Shooting

Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra qualified for the final in the men’s 10m air rifle shooting at the Rio 2016 Olympics but couldn’t replicate his gold-winning performance from Beijing 2008. He ended up fourth after a shootoff with Serhiy Kulish of Ukraine. 

 

Sania Mirza/Rohan Bopanna – Rio 2016 Olympics, Mixed Doubles Tennis

The fourth-seeded Indian pair of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna lost in the semi-finals of the mixed doubles at Rio 2016. They went down 6-1, 7-5 to Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka, missing out on the bronze. 

 

Dipa Karmakar – Rio 2016 Olympics, Women’s Vault Gymnastics

Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian female gymnast to reach the final of the vault event at the Rio 2016 Olympics. She performed the difficult Produnova Vault but missed the bronze by 0.150 points. 

 

Deepak Punia – Tokyo 2020 Olympics, 86kg Freestyle Wrestling

At Tokyo 2020, Deepak Punia lost the men’s 86kg freestyle wrestling bronze medal match 4-2 to San Marino’s Myles Amine, who scored a quick ankle lock in the final seconds to secure the win. 

 

Aditi Ashok – Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Women’s Golf

In her second Olympic appearance at Tokyo 2020, Aditi Ashok held a top-three position throughout the women’s golf event but slipped to fourth in the final round, missing the bronze by just one stroke. 

 

Team India – Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Women’s Hockey

The Indian women’s hockey team made a historic run to the semi-finals at Tokyo 2020 but ended without a medal. They lost the bronze medal match 4-3 to Great Britain. 

 

Arjun Babuta – Paris 2024 Olympics, Men’s 10m Air Rifle Shooting

Indian shooter Arjun Babuta finished fourth in the men’s 10m air rifle final at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a score of 208.4, just 1.4 points short of a medal, which was secured by Croatia’s Miran Maricic. 

 

Dhiraj Bommadevara/Ankita Bhakat – Paris 2024 Olympics, Mixed Team Archery

Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat finished fourth in the mixed team archery event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. They lost 6-2 to the USA’s Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold in the bronze medal match, but their result was India’s best in archery at the Olympics. They also made history as the first Indians to reach the semi-finals of an archery event at the Olympics. 

 

Manu Bhaker – Paris 2024 Olympics, Women’s 25m Air Pistol

Manu Bhaker narrowly missed a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics in the women’s 25m air pistol shooting final. Despite being in the top three for most of the final, she ended fourth after a shoot-off with Hungary’s Veronika Major, missing two targets compared to Major’s one.
