The 33-year-old man migrated from Guatemala to the US a year ago. However, whether he migrated legally or illegally is still in question. During a press conference in the evening, the New York Police Department(NYPD) officials narrated the incident. They said, “As the train pulled into the station, the suspect calmly walked up to the victim. The female victim was in a seated position. The suspect used what we believe to be a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing, which became fully engulfed in a matter of seconds.”

The on-duty officers took notice of the incident with the smell of smoke and rushed for the aid. They put off the fire with a fire extinguisher, but by that time the woman was already dead. While the officers tried to get the situation under control their body-worn cameras captured Zapeta sitting on a chair outside the cart.

After identifying him as a suspect they circulated his name and picture which helped 3 high school students identify him on another train. They informed the NYPD who halted the train at the next stop and arrested him.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, expressed grief with the family of the victim. “Grateful to the young New Yorkers and transit officers who stepped up to help our NYPD make a quick arrest following this morning's heinous and deadly subway attack. This type of depraved behaviour has no place in our subways, and we are committed to working hard to ensure there is swift justice for all victims of violent crime,” he said.

The NYPD is yet to release the reason behind Zapeta's actions, but the mayor has called it a case of senseless killing.
